Young Politicians Union (YPU) has embarked on expanding in some districts by setting up Constituency chapters to facilitate easy access to citizens and building capacity of youth to hold the government accountable.
Speaking in an interview, YPU national director, Clement Makuwa said the move was aimed at scaling up union’s engagement with local level leaders including ward councilors, Village Development Committee (VDC) and Area Development Committees (ADC) on good governance and development at that level.
“Today (Saturday) I had an orientation meeting with young politicians that have just joined and established the chapter in Lilongwe West Constituency and this took place at Mletsankhulu Primary School,” said Makuwa.
He added: “Among other things, the youths noted that youth inclusion in local government system is very low and that all the development agenda does not include youth issues. However, they also recognised that they lack capacity and also some VDC leadership members deliberately sideline the youth.”
He said the exercise is demand driven and his organisation has already expression of interests from other districts where soon will be attended to.
On his part, interim chapter director for Lilongwe West Constituency, Ezala Khethani called upon his fellow members therein to mobilize more youths to join and strengthen the chapter. He also appealed capacity development and enhancement in public expenditure tracking, leadership and governance.
YPU is an enter-party organisation which was established to among other things promote unity among young politicians in the country.
