Woman in scramble for relief items dies in Balaka

A 56-year-old woman has died while scrambling for relief items  that was meant to be distributed by a certain charity organisation in Balaka district.

Balaka police public relations officer inspector Felix Misomali told helplinemw.com  that Gladys Salim, met her fate on the evening of Thursday, April 23 at Utale after being hit by a speeding motor vehicle which was distributing the relief items.

Misomali said: “while distribution exercise was underway,people started scrambling for the relief items and the driver, who is yet to be identified, drove off speedily, accidentally hitting the woman in the process”.

Misomali highlighted that the deceased sustained serious injuries which led to her death while receiving treatment at Utale Health Center.

“She sustained a deep cut in the groin resulting to loss of blood and despite well-wishers rushing her to Utale Health Centre, she died whilst receiving treatment”, he said.

Gladys Salim hailed from Sato Village, Traditional Authority Nkaya in Balaka.

Meanwhile, Balaka police has appealed  to the general public to assist tracing the driver and exercise cautious when they are closer on the roads.
