Police in Chitipa are keeping in custody Hydon Mtambo 38, and Tyson Sikwese 19, for allegedly being found in possession of fake Malawian currency in the district.
File compiled at Chitipa Police Station indicates that, on April 4, 2020 at around 21:00 hours, the two were found splashing money at Vilishala beer drinking joint within Chitipa Trading Centre.
In an interview with Chitipa police public relations officer Gladwell Simwaka, said that the Police were tipped off of the behavior of the two suspects and made a follow up which led to their arrest.
” We were told by well wishers that the two suspects are acting suspiciously and the money they are having seems to be fake. So we made some follow ups on them which lead to their arrest”,he said.
He also added that the suspects had k2,000 fake bank notes amounting to k82,000 which had similar serial numbers.
“Mtambo and Sikwese were found in possession of K2, 000 notes with serial numbers as; AD0348543(24 notes), AD0348554 (11 notes) and AD0348558 (6 notes).” He added.
He further added that investigations are in progress to trace the source of fake money and that the two will appear in court soon to answer charge of found in possession of fake currency.

The police is further pleading with citizens all over the country to call the police or go to any nearby police station if they see any person having fake currency and if one is found will sever face that law.
Hydon Mtambo comes from Mwenefuvya village while Tyson Sikwese comes from Siyombwe village, both from Traditional Authority Mwaulambia in Chitipa.
