In a bid to restore lost forest, Muslim Artists Association MAAS has donated 3000 trees to people of senior chief Simon in Neno district.
The tree seedlings donation initiative was made possible through Pacific Limited owned by Faizal Aboo.
Speaking during the handover ceremony which took place at Neno District Agricultural Division Office (DADO), Muslim Artist Association president Nurdeen Casssim said Muslims in the country have a role in mitigating climate change and effects of natural disasters through a forestation.
Cassim also said: “Islam promotes and encourage planting of tree hence the youth group decided to take part in the 2020/21 tree planting exercise as championed by government”.
The MASS president encouraged traditional leaders and in the area to plant the donated tress in their respected areas and take good care of them.
Cassim also commended Neno Faizal Aboo and Pacific Limited as well Neno south parliamentarian Mark Katsonga for their support in the initiative.
Receiving the donation on behalf of his constituents, Member of Parliament for Neno south Mark Katsonga commended MAAS for the good gesture adding area it will motivate people in his area to plant more trees this year.
“Neno district is one of the districts affected by deforestation in Malawi hence called for holistic approach in reversing the current situation,” Katsogo said.
The parliamentarian is of the view that to end the problem of charcoal burning, there is a need for government and other stakeholders to empower those involved in the business.
In his remarks, senior chief Simon called upon forest officers in the district to regularly visit and advise people in the area on how best they can take good care of the trees.
“Planting trees is meaningless if they are not taken care of as they cannot survive on their own”, senior Chief Simon told the gathering that.
He then thanked Member of Parliament Mark Katsonga for coordinating with Muslims Artist Association to donate the trees in his area.
He promised to share the tress with his group villages who will in turn plant them in their respected jurisdictions.
Muslim Artists Association MAAS is an Islamic youth group aimed at uplifting various talents of Muslim youth in Malawi.
