The Eastern Region immigration office has urged people in Mangochi district to report to the immigration office or any relevant office when noticing any illegal entries through Malawi-Mozambique boarders in order to prevent spread of Covid-19.
The appeal comes at a time when Malawi has recorded 33 Covid-19 cases with three deaths and three recoveries.
In an interview with helplinemw.com on the role Eastern region immigration department is playing to make sure that citizens in Mangochi are safe from the deadly disease from those entering the district secretly using uncharted routes, Regional Immigration Officer Vivian Kasambo said they are doing everything possible to make sure that illegal entries of foreigners entering the district.
Kasambo urged people in Mangochi district to cooperate and work with all stakeholders in fighting against the covid-19.
“We are trying our best to secure all illegal entry points including the one in katuli which the government is looking forward to establish as a boarder post to make sure that full visibility of immigration activities are available,”he added.
He also appealed to well wishers to provide with resources that may be required to fight Covid-19 at the immigration department.
“we are proud to say we have been given some new vehicles which is now operating in Chiponde borders however some resources such as mask,hand sanitizer,buckets and gloves are needed to protect ourselves from covid-19”, Kasambo said.
The Eastern region immigration officer said: “There is a need for people to be aware and be active in responding to Covid-19 issues. Some people are taking this issue lightly because they don’t know how deadly the disease can be”.
Meanwhile Traditional Authority Katuli has mobilized the villagers as well as chiefs to ensure those found entering Malawi through uncharted routes should be caught and handed over to immigration officers or any other security officers .
According to Traditional Authority Katuli they are working hand in hand with security agencies in the area to make sure that the act of using hi area to enter Malawi from and Mozambique should stop and people have to respect the law by using the authorized routes.
“He said: “We are working together with Immigration as well as some security personnel to make sure that people should completely stop using porous boarders as it can endanger lives of people in my area”.
